Color Harmonies

Three or four times a year, Fibers brings color expert, Bonnie Humiston to Grass Valley. For four days, she works with clients to develop their individual color harmonies, also known as palettes.

Most of us are fairly able to recognize sounds that are out of harmony -- often, they hurt our ears, and research shows that such sounds are often harmful to our health.

Sound and color are related in their vibrational qualities, and the same discordance that we can hear with our ears exists vibrationally with color.

Everyone has a basic color harmony, expressed in our hair, eyes, skin and blush tones. When the clothes we wear don't mesh vibrationally with these elements of our individual color palette, the result is a disharmony that can make us appear older, fatigued or even unhealthy. That same lack of harmony can affect all areas of our lives, making us feel insecure about our personal appearance, making it more difficult for us to concentrate, even affecting our relationships and our stress levels.

Simplistic "Four Seasons" methods of determining your color palette do not even begin to approach the levels of complexity involved in actually creating an individual palette in which YOU are the key to the harmony.

Self-help books may give you some clues, but in the end, the fact that you aren't a trained color specialist makes it difficult to zero in on your own colors. Anyway, how could it be possible that there are only 4 color palettes for everybody in the world?

We aren't trained to be sensitive to color in the same way we're trained to be sensitive to sound, so it isn't surprising that most of us have only a vague sense that "something isn't right" about certain colors when they're used together. And because we haven't learned to see all the colors and the variations, for example, among reds, it's very difficult to be accurate about the colors that really do work well for us. Once we know that, in general, we don't look good in some basic color, we don't look at it in any form -- in fact, we often stop seeing it, even where it exists in nature or in the yarn shop. That color becomes like a little Catch-22 blank spot for us: we don't explore it because we don't know it and we don't know it because we don't explore it.

For example, I've heard so many times in the shop, "Don't show me red -- I can't wear red, I look terrible in it!" Now, think about -- we all have blood, and except for the Klingons among us, that blood is red -- of some sort. That means that everybody has a red that makes them look terrific. Finding it on your own, though, is not necessarily easy. This is where Bonnie comes in. She has nearly 20 years of experience as a color specialist, and she has nearly 400 different red swatches in her color bank! Believe me, EVERYBODY has a red that makes them look terrific.

Bonnie's method works with people of all skin colors, because she actually paints the color of your skin, determining the pigments that comprise it. She finds the precise color of your eyes, your hair, your blood as it expresses itself through your skin. She doesn't start from trying to determine your season, but the season emerges as the palette develops, and the result is an individual harmony of color so beautiful that each one seems a small work of art.

When you have Bonnie create your color harmony, you're tapping into her tremendous expertise, and at Fibers, you can take advantage of the her substantially lower fees (palettes in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego typically start at around $400 and can cost as much as ... I'm not joking ... $700!). In addition, Fibers is one of the select locations where she offers a free, three-hour workshop during which time you can assemble your palette. This opportunity to feel and manipulate the color swatches is an extremely helpful part of integrating your new palette into your life. At the same time, you'll learn a great deal about how to use it, about other seasons, about texture and line as it relates to your season, and about how to make your palette work in your home decor.

Don't you owe it to yourself (and that closet that's bursting with clothes you have no idea why you don't wear) to find out more? Join us for a free Introduction to Color Harmonies, then make an appointment to have one created for you!
