Our Philosophy

Allison:

My mother taught me to knit when I was 8 years old. She always held the yarn in her left hand, so I do, too, but I've learned to hold it in several different ways, so I can teach you in a way that works for you! Because I learned with someone who was adept at showing me how to I learned to fix mistakes, and so I was willing to make plenty of them! As a result, I'm pretty fearless when it comes to knitting -- I'll try anything to see if it works, especially with yarn that doesn't mind being re-knit!

The other relevent experience I bring to our shop is decades of work as a Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and Trainer. The Feldenkrais Method® is a means of improving your ability to do just about anything, by learning to pay very detailed attention to what you're doing. This work has given me patience that I bring to teaching knitting, and also a wealth of different ways of explaining things, so that if you don't get it one way, you're likely to get it in another! My goal is to help you become the best knitter you can be, without ever feeling inadequate about what you haven't learned yet. I rarely will fix your mistakes, because I don't make house calls -- I want you to learn to fix them yourself, so that at midnight on Saturday -- when Fibers is going to be closed for 2 days, you can take care of what comes up without my help!

My vision for Fibers is that it's a place where we can connect with others who share our passion now, and with those who've come before and will come after after us, by continuing a tradition of handwork that spans the ages and the globe -- and if there's life on other planets, I'm sure those life-forms are also knitting! I see Fibers as a place of abundance, where we can indulge our own desire to knit and at the same time, choose to support those in areas of the world who struggle to survive. For me, knitting is not only an addiction, but also a meditation, a stress-reducer, an outlet for my creativity and a never-ending source of contentment. From my first dream of Fibers, it has been a place where those who came to shop would find a feast for their senses, and those who work here couldn't wait to arrive. I hope you like what we've created!
